Role of the ESL Teacher

The ESL teacher plays a multifaceted role within our school. In addition to providing support to students, the ESL teacher works in classrooms and in collaboration with the teacher to plan for the needs of their English language learners. This includes English language development, academic skills, and social integration.

In collaboration, ESL and classroom teachers:
* use the STEPS to English Proficiency Observable Language Behaviours (STEP OLBs) to set learning goals for ELLs. (parents can ask for a copy of this tool)

* support each other in planning and differentiating for the ELLs

* support each other in teaching English language learners to understand, speak, read and write English

* support newcomers' and their families with orientation

* meet to assess student work
