Who is an English Language Learner?

English Language Learner (ELL) is a broad terms that describes students learning English through ESL programs. These students may be Canadian-born or newly arrived from other countries. They come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, and have a variety of strengths and needs. They may require focused educational supports from all teachers to enable them to fully access grade level curriculum and attain proficiency in English.

ESL (English as a Second Language) Programs

ESL programs are designed for students whose first language is one other than English or is a variety of English significantly different from that used for instruction in Ontario schools. This can include:

* newcomers from other countries
* Canadian-born students from Aboriginal, Francophone or immigrant communities in which language other than English are primarily spoken at home

How long will it take my child to be proficient in English

It can take 1-2 years for ELLs to acquire conversational and day to day language proficiency and it can take 5-7 years to acquire age appropriate English in academic and literacy skills.
